Tithe Applotment Books 1823-38
The Composition Act of 1823 stated that tithes were due to the Established Church (Church of Ireland), which, until the introduction of the Act had been payable in kind, should be paid in money.  To determine the amount paid by each landholder, valuation surveys were carried throughout Ireland over a 15 year period until the abolition of the Tithes in 1838.

Griffith’s Valuation of Ireland 1848-64

From 1848 to 1864, Sir Richard Griffith, a geologist and Director of Ireland’s Valuation Office in Dublin, undertook the first survey to assess property values in Ireland.  The primary purpose was to assign annual tax to each property that would go towards supporting the poor within their Poor Law Union.  Known as the Griffith Valuations, these Primary Valuation of Tenements, record the assessment date, lessor’s name, lessee’s name, description of the property (house, office, garden, land), location (Townland, County, Parish, Barony) and its taxable value at which the property could be rented annually.
